Inspired by a Peruvian folktale, this illustration shows a serpent embracing a girl amid a dark, decaying landscape. A girl with flame-orange hair sits in quiet profile, eyes closed, while a patterned serpent arches over her head. Orange pomegranates hang from a branch against a deep black night streaked with white rain.

In the story, a mysterious shapeshifter charms the girl, and she mistakes his allure for love. As their bond deepens, the world around them withers. Plants decay, animals flee, and the community falters under a spreading blight.

The tale warns against seeking only comfort or beauty that mirrors our desires, and invites us to discern deeper meanings. It reminds us to stay rooted in our humanity. Once the unconscious becomes conscious, the shapeshifter loses its power.

Created by Larisa Volkavichyute in soft pastels and printed for the wall.
